How pay after tax works in Sweden

In Sweden the bulk of income tax is municipal: your kommun and region set a combined rate that most people pay, and only higher earners also pay the national (state) tax of 20% on income above a threshold. A tax-free basic allowance (grundavdrag) reduces the taxable amount, and the earned income tax credit (jobbskatteavdrag) lowers the tax for people who work.

Because the municipal rate varies by where you live, the same salary gives a slightly different net in Stockholm than in a higher-rate municipality. Members of the Church of Sweden also pay a church fee, and everyone pays a small burial fee. The calculator brings the municipal rate, the state tax, the allowances and the credits together for your net lon.
